Climbing Snowden for Prostate Cancer Reseach

Recently, Ian, Clive (our PCSG committee members) and 3 friends climbed Snowdon to raise money for Prostate Cancer Research.
Three members of the group who climbed Snowden have undergone robotic prostatectomies within the last 12 months, demonstrating that recovery from prostate cancer can still allow you to lead a full, active, and rewarding life.
Clive and Ian strongly believe that staying active and maintaining a positive mindset can play an important role in recovery, helping improve both physical and mental wellbeing.
Their achievement also shows that it is possible to accomplish great things after surgery and while undergoing ADT (androgen deprivation therapy).
Together, they raised an amazing £3,537 for Prostate Cancer Research through the Snowdonia for Science Challenge on 13 June 2026.
If you’d like to find out more about the challenge, their recovery journeys following robotic prostatectomy, or how they manage the effects of ADT, please come and chat with us at the next Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting.
Sharing is caring, and knowledge is empowering. We are stronger together. It’s good to talk, share experiences, and support one another through the prostate cancer journey.
Well done all!! 💙

HEALTH AND WELLBEING EVENT
WOW! Our Health and Wellbeing Event was another successful one and we are so thankful for everyone who gave their time to be there and support us!
Thank you to Katie from the dieticians, Ian and Clive from the Walking and Talking group, David from the BROS prostate cancer support group, Jo from Macmillan, Louise from Complimentary Therapies, Steve from the Wolves Foundation, B Jassi for the physical exercise stand and Tess from Coloplast.
We also want to thank everyone who came to the event and hope everyone enjoyed it and also gained any extra support from our stalls.

Monday 27th April 2026
Consultant Radiographer Renita Horton
Yet another great turn out to our meeting, even when the sun was shining! On Mondays meeting, we were able to welcome Renita Horton, consultant radiologist from New Cross Hospital. Renita held a Q&A session for all members of the support group and there was a lot of information shared between the group. Renita specialises in external beam radiotherapy and was able to explain this in finer detail and also answer questions about SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy), hormone treatment and also sexual function following prostate cancer treatment.
The raffle was a success as always and over £100 was raised for our support group. We thank you all for attending and look forward to seeing you at our Health and Wellbeing Event on 1st June 2026!
Clives Story
Clive Wilson, one of our new committee members is walking for prostate cancer! Please see his story below:

“Hello to all my family and friends as many of you are aware in late 2024 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and in Feb 2025 underwent surgery to remove my prostate, this was a life changing event for me but with help and support from family and friends I got through it, there is still a long journey ahead for me so in the meantime I would like to give something back so this June 2026 I will be walking up Snowdon to help raise awareness for prostate cancer and funds for prostate cancer Uk I hope you can support me and help me reach my fund target. Many thanks. Snowdonia for Science was founded in 2008 by the inspiring Matt Rannamets who had prostate cancer. He wanted to bring like-minded people together to raise funds and take on a unique challenge. Prostate cancer sadly took Matt’s life but his legacy lives on with this inspiring event.
On 13th June 2026 I am taking part in Snowdonia for Science 2026.
I will be trekking to the summit of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) all in aid of Prostate Cancer Research.
The best part of reaching the summit is knowing that each step I, and the other supporters taking part with me, take is a step towards raising vital funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer Research.
Together with your donations and my desire to get to the Summit, we can take on Snowdon and transform the lives of people with prostate cancer by advancing diagnosis, developing treatments and securing universal screening.
Snowdonia for Science 2026 is about community and about the immense strength that comes from people coming together with purpose and a shared desire we all hold: to stop prostate cancer from unnecessarily and prematurely claiming the lives of the men we love.
Support me today and give me that extra courage to reach the summit.”
Monday 2nd March 2026
ANP Michelle Milletic

We would like to again thank Michelle for coming from the QE to talk to our group about continence. Michelle gave an excellent and informative talk about continence following prostatectomy and radiotherapy. It really did highlight the importance of continence following radical treatment for prostate cancer.
There was a lot of questions and we hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!
Unfortunately, there was no raffle this time, however, there will now be a raffle at our next meeting on 27th April.
Ians story
Ian Taylor has kindly shared his story about his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer and his journey. Please click the video below for his story.
Monday 19th January 2026 Dr Steve Allen
For our first meeting of 2026 we welcomed back Dr Steve Allen who gave us a talk about the future of prostate cancer. It was extremely interesting and Steve spoke about up to date scanning, and gave an in depth look as to why we use certain kinds of imaging to diagnose prostate cancer.

Once again, we thank Steve for his excellent talk and we hope everyone enjoyed it!

2025

Monday 3rd November 2025
Mr Cooke
We were very lucky to have Mr Cooke come join us for our last support group of 2025. Mr Cooke gave a fantastic and interesting talk about robotic prostatectomy and we are always so grateful for him coming to talk to us.

We also raised £90 in the raffle which is amazing.

Thank you all for coming this year and we will soon be putting up our dates for 2026, so watch this space!
Monday 8th September 2025
Mr Mak
Mr Mak (Urology Consultant) was kind enough to come and chat to our support group about research trials and prostate cancer.
Currently the ELIPSE (Evaluation of Lymphadenectomy In high risk Prostate cancer SurgEry) trial is studying two different types of surgery for men with high risk localised prostate cancer. The two types of surgery being compared are:

Surgery where the prostate and lymph glands are removed vs surgery where the prostate alone in removed.

This study will hopefully in the future determine whether it is better to remove the lymph nodes during prostate cancer surgery

Thankyou Mr Mak for joining us!

Monday 21st July 2025
Dr. Steve Allen and Ian Chambers
On Monday 21st July it was our AGM at first where we discussed the groups current finances. Moving on from that we were extremely lucky to have Dr Steve Allen (Retired consultant anaesthetist) come to talk to us about sexual function after surgery and why it is so important. It was a fantastic presentation which really explored the finer details of sexual function following prostate surgery. This raised a lot of questions and it was great to see everyone taking an interest.
We also had Ian Chambers (Vacuum Pump Representative) who gave a talk on why vacuum pump therapy is vital following prostatectomy for penile rehabilitation and how vacuum pumps help gain and maintain an erection.
Health and Wellbeing Event
We had yet another amazing turn out to our annual Health and Wellbeing Event! We had members of our prostate cancer group, bladder cancer group and BROs all came along to speak to our professionals, ask for support and have their questions answered. A raffle also took place and we raised over £70 for our support group!
Steve Swain kindly volunteered to take some excellent pictures of the day and they will be uploaded to the website very soon.
Thank you to all the professionals and for everyone attending, we cant wait to do it again next year!

Raising money for PCUK
Dave Peters is riding his bike and raising money for Prostate Cancer UK! Read his story and if you would like to donate, he will be at our PCSG meetings!

"My name is Dave Peters a pensioner of 75 years. I am a keen cyclist and my challenge for this year is 3 rides in 3 days. Ride One is from Wolverhampton to Barmouth in Wales 130 miles on Friday June 20th. Day Two is Saturday - 60 miles down the Walsh coast line. Day 3 is Sunday and I cycle all the way back to Wolverhampton. With your help I would like to raise £500 for Prostate Cancer UK. I finished my prostate cancer treatment in April 2022. Now I hope that the money raised by you and me will help to bring a screening program for men and maybe help stop needless deaths from Prostate cancer.
Thanks for your support. Dave."
Monday 28th April 2025
Dr Uttara Karnik
We were lucky to have Dr Uttara Karnik join us the 28th April. Dr Karnik is one of the consultant histopathologists at New Cross Hospital and is a valuable member of the Multidisciplinary Team. Her talk today explained about pathology and the important role it has in diagnosing prostate cancer, and also talked about Gleason scores, grade groups and even what prostate cancer cells look like under a microscope!

Another amazing turn out, even when the sun was shining!

Monday 3rd March 2025 Renita Horton - Radiotherapy
In our meeting 3rd March 2025, we had a very informative talk and Q&A session with Consultant Radiographer Renita Horton. She discussed all things radiotherapy, what to expect before, during and after your prostate cancer treatment and the side effects that may come along with it. It was very well received by everyone who came!

We also had a very successful raffle and raised over £70 for the group!
